Which Guru added the writings of Guru Tegh Bahadur to the Guru Granth Sahib?

Guru Gobind Singh added Guru Tegh Bahadur’s writings to the Sikh scripture that became the Guru Granth Sahib. The work was completed during the preparation of the Damdama recension around 1704.

The earlier scripture, the Adi Granth, had been compiled by Guru Arjan and installed at the Harmandir Sahib in 1604. It contained compositions by several earlier Sikh Gurus, but not those of Guru Tegh Bahadur, who was martyred in Delhi in 1675. Guru Gobind Singh later incorporated his father’s hymns and saloks into the scripture.

Bhai Mani Singh assisted Guru Gobind Singh in preparing this final recension. The resulting Damdama bir became the definitive form of the scripture and included 116 hymns attributed to Guru Tegh Bahadur. Guru Gobind Singh’s own compositions were generally preserved separately in the Dasam Granth rather than added to the Guru Granth Sahib.

The frequent mistake is crediting Guru Arjan, who compiled the first major edition, with adding Tegh Bahadur’s later compositions. Guru Arjan’s work came roughly seven decades earlier.
