Which Sikh Guru provided refuge to Dara Shikoh?

Guru Har Rai provided refuge and assistance to Dara Shikoh. The seventh Sikh Guru supported the Mughal prince during the succession struggle against his brother Aurangzeb, including offering medical care and help as Dara fled after his defeat.

Dara Shikoh, the eldest son of Emperor Shah Jahan, was associated with a more tolerant, Sufi-influenced outlook. Aurangzeb defeated him in 1658, seized the Mughal throne, and later had him executed. Guru Har Rai’s assistance therefore carried serious political consequences, even though the Guru generally avoided direct military conflict.

Accounts describe Guru Har Rai’s forces helping delay pursuit and traditions recall the Guru treating Dara with compassion. Some details differ among sources, including whether the assistance is best described as formal shelter, medical treatment, logistical help, or a combination of these. The central historical association is nevertheless clear: Guru Har Rai aided Dara Shikoh.

Aurangzeb later summoned Guru Har Rai to explain his support. The Guru sent his elder son, Ram Rai, who altered a scriptural verse while answering the emperor. Guru Har Rai rejected that alteration and chose his younger son, Guru Har Krishan, as successor.
