Which Sikh Guru was born as Bhai Lehna?

Guru Angad was born as Bhai Lehna. Born in 1504 in Matte-di-Sarai in the Punjab region, Lehna originally followed a religious path connected with the worship of the goddess Durga before encountering Guru Nanak at Kartarpur.

Lehna became a devoted disciple and served Guru Nanak for several years. Impressed by his humility, discipline, and loyalty, Nanak selected him as successor rather than appointing one of his own sons. In 1539, Lehna received the name Angad, meaning “one’s own limb” or “part of the body,” expressing his close spiritual relationship with Nanak.

Guru Angad became the second Sikh Guru and led the community from 1539 to 1552. He is especially associated with standardizing and promoting the Gurmukhi script, which helped make Sikh teachings accessible and supported the preservation of the community’s hymns.
