Which Sikh Guru fought the Battle of Muktsar? Guru Gobind Singh fought the Battle of Muktsar in 1705.

The battle took place on 29 December 1705 near Khidrana, a water reservoir in the Punjab region, during the Mughal-Sikh conflicts. Guru Gobind Singh’s forces were pursued by a Mughal army led by Wazir Khan after the siege and evacuation of Anandpur Sahib. The Guru chose a defensible position near the reservoir, where the terrain and shortage of water hampered the opposing army.

The battle is especially remembered for the Chalis Mukte, or Forty Liberated Ones. These Sikhs had earlier abandoned the Guru during the hardships at Anandpur, but returned to fight after being inspired by Mai Bhago. They died in battle, and Guru Gobind Singh tore up their declaration of abandonment after the wounded Mahan Singh asked him to do so.

The Sikh victory gave the site its later name, Muktsar, meaning “pool of liberation.” Muktsar is also associated with the annual Mela Maghi, which commemorates the forty martyrs. The battle was the last major battle led by Guru Gobind Singh, although he continued to influence Sikh affairs afterward.
