Which Sikh Guru compiled the Adi Granth?

Guru Arjan compiled the Adi Granth. As the fifth Sikh Guru, he organized hymns from Guru Nanak and the preceding Sikh Gurus, added his own compositions, and included devotional poetry by Hindu and Muslim bhagats.

The compilation was completed in 1604, with Bhai Gurdas traditionally serving as its principal scribe. It was installed at the newly built Harmandir Sahib in Amritsar, with Baba Buddha appointed as the first granthi. This created an authoritative collection of Sikh scripture and helped preserve the community’s teachings in an organized form.

A common mix-up is Guru Gobind Singh, the tenth Guru. He did not compile the original Adi Granth, but later incorporated the hymns of Guru Tegh Bahadur and prepared the final recension known as the Guru Granth Sahib. In 1708, Guru Gobind Singh declared the scripture the eternal Guru of the Sikhs.
