Which Shakespeare comedy features the character Sir John Falstaff?

The story behind the answer

The Shakespeare comedy featuring Sir John Falstaff is The Merry Wives of Windsor.

In this play, Falstaff travels to Windsor short of money and decides to court two wealthy married women, Mistress Ford and Mistress Page. He sends them identical love letters, expecting his charm to bring financial advantage, but the women compare the letters and plot to punish his arrogance.

Their schemes produce the comedy’s best-known episodes, including Falstaff being hidden in a laundry basket and dumped into the river. The wives later arrange an elaborate public humiliation involving disguises, fairies, and Windsor Forest.

Falstaff is not unique to this comedy. He is also a major character in Henry IV, Part 1 and Henry IV, Part 2, where he befriends Prince Hal, the future Henry V. That connection causes a frequent quiz mistake: although Falstaff is strongly associated with the Henry IV plays, The Merry Wives of Windsor is the Shakespeare comedy centered on his comic attempts to court married women.
