Which Sesame Street character hosted the Word on the Street segment?

The story behind the answer

Murray Monster hosted Sesame Street’s “Word on the Street” segment.

Murray is a dark orange, energetic monster performed by Joey Mazzarino. Beginning in season 38, he hosted the “What’s the Word on the Street?” segments, which typically appeared before the main episode and explored the meaning of the day’s featured word.

The character’s role expanded beyond vocabulary. In later seasons, Murray introduced letters and numbers, previewed upcoming segments, announced sponsors, and appeared in “Murray Has a Little Lamb” with his purple lamb, Ovejita. These jobs made him a guide who connected the show’s separate educational pieces.

The other choices are long-running Sesame Street monsters, but they are not the canonical host of this segment. Grover is known for many comic roles, Telly for his worries and obsessions, and Herry Monster for his great strength and clumsy enthusiasm.
