Broadcom makes networking and connectivity chips and acquired VMware in 2023.
Broadcom Inc. grew from the semiconductor business created by Avago Technologies, which acquired Broadcom Corporation in 2016 and adopted the Broadcom name. Its hardware portfolio includes chips for data centers, networking, broadband, wireless communications, storage, and industrial applications.
The company also has a large infrastructure-software business. In 2023, Broadcom completed its acquisition of VMware, a major provider of virtualization and private-cloud software. The transaction changed Broadcom’s mix from a primarily semiconductor company into a broader technology infrastructure group.
Broadcom is often confused with the former Broadcom Corporation because the names overlap. The current public company is Broadcom Inc., while the former corporation was acquired by Avago. Its market value reflects both semiconductor earnings and recurring enterprise-software revenue.
