Broadcom completed its acquisition of VMware for about $69 billion in November 2023.
The transaction closed on November 22, 2023, after regulatory reviews in several jurisdictions. VMware was a major provider of virtualization and enterprise cloud software, while Broadcom was best known for semiconductor and infrastructure-software businesses. The acquisition significantly expanded Broadcom’s software operations and made VMware part of its infrastructure-software division.
Broadcom had announced the agreement in May 2022. The deal was structured as a cash-and-stock transaction and became one of the largest technology acquisitions ever completed. Regulators examined whether the combination could reduce competition in server virtualization and related enterprise markets.
Broadcom is frequently confused with Broadcom Corporation, the older company it acquired in 2016. The present Broadcom Inc. traces its corporate history through Avago Technologies, which bought Broadcom Corporation and adopted the Broadcom name.
