Broadcom acquired VMware in a transaction completed on November 22, 2023.
Broadcom announced its agreement to buy VMware in May 2022, and the transaction closed on November 22, 2023, after regulatory review in multiple jurisdictions. The deal was valued at approximately $69 billion and became one of the largest technology acquisitions ever completed.
VMware was known for virtualization software that allows multiple virtual machines to run on a single physical server. Its enterprise products became important in data centers and private-cloud environments. Broadcom, historically a major designer and supplier of semiconductor products, used the acquisition to expand its infrastructure-software business.
The deal did not mean that VMware became a chip manufacturer. VMware continued to provide software, while Broadcom’s portfolio combined semiconductor operations with enterprise software assets. Regulatory authorities, including the European Commission, examined the transaction before it closed, making the completion date distinct from the earlier announcement date.
