Broadcom acquired VMware in 2023 for approximately $69 billion.
The transaction expanded Broadcom from a major semiconductor supplier into a larger infrastructure-technology company. VMware was known for virtualization software, which allows organizations to run multiple virtual machines on shared physical servers. Broadcom completed the acquisition on November 22, 2023.
Broadcom began as a semiconductor business and developed products for communications, networking, storage, and broadband equipment. Its growth also came through acquisitions, including the purchase of CA Technologies in 2018 and Symantec’s enterprise-security business in 2019.
The deal is sometimes confused with Broadcom’s earlier attempt to buy Qualcomm, which Qualcomm rejected and which the U.S. government blocked in 2018. Broadcom Inc. is also distinct from the original Broadcom Corporation, which was acquired by Avago Technologies in 2016 and adopted the Broadcom name.
