Broadcom Inc. is a semiconductor and infrastructure-software company headquartered in Palo Alto, California. The modern company grew from Avago Technologies’ 2016 acquisition of Broadcom Corporation, after which Avago adopted the Broadcom name and expanded the combined portfolio.
Its semiconductor products serve wireless communications, data centers, networking, broadband, storage, and industrial markets. Broadcom is especially associated with connectivity and infrastructure components that are often built into larger systems rather than sold directly to consumers.
In 2023, Broadcom completed its acquisition of VMware, a major virtualization and cloud-software company. That transaction increased Broadcom’s software exposure. Broadcom is distinct from Broadcom Corporation, the earlier company, and from Qualcomm, another large semiconductor business focused heavily on wireless communications.
