Lorenzo Ghiberti won the 1401 competition for Florence’s Baptistery doors, helping launch the Italian Renaissance.
The competition called for a bronze relief panel showing the Sacrifice of Isaac. Ghiberti’s design defeated entries by several artists, most famously Filippo Brunelleschi. The victory brought Ghiberti a major commission for the north doors of the Baptistery.
Ghiberti worked on those doors for about 21 years, completing them in 1424. He later created the east doors, which Michelangelo reportedly praised as worthy of being the “Gates of Paradise.” The panels use increasingly sophisticated perspective and architectural settings.
A common mix-up is confusing the competition with the later east doors. Ghiberti won the competition with a single panel in 1401; the celebrated Gates of Paradise were a later project. The competition is often treated as an important early milestone because it placed classical subject matter, naturalistic figures, and technical bronze work at the center of Florentine artistic debate.
