Which sculptor created Maman at the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao?

The story behind the answer

Louise Bourgeois created Maman, the giant spider sculpture displayed at the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao.

Maman is a monumental bronze, stainless-steel, and marble sculpture whose spider form can reach more than nine metres in height. The Guggenheim Bilbao has displayed one version of the work outside the museum.

Bourgeois repeatedly used spiders in her art, connecting them with ideas of motherhood, protection, labor, and memory. She associated the spider image with her mother, who worked as a weaver and was seen by Bourgeois as protective and industrious.

Maman is not permanently exclusive to Bilbao. Multiple casts exist, and versions have appeared at institutions around the world, including the National Gallery of Canada and the Tate Modern.
