Which Scottish loch is linked to a famous monster legend?

The story behind the answer

The Scottish loch linked to the famous monster legend is Loch Ness.

Loch Ness is a large freshwater loch in the Scottish Highlands, extending between Fort Augustus and the area southwest of Inverness. It lies along the Great Glen Fault, where glacial erosion carved the long, deep basin. Its dark, peat-stained water and great depth helped create an ideal setting for mysterious stories.

The Loch Ness Monster, popularly called Nessie, became an international sensation in 1933 after newspaper reports described unusual sightings. Older traditions also include a sixth-century account associated with Saint Columba, although the modern legend is much more recent. Searches and sonar surveys have produced intriguing reports but no verified evidence of a monster.

A common mix-up is confusing the loch with Loch Lomond, Scotland’s largest loch by surface area. Loch Ness is not the largest by surface area, but its exceptional depth gives it the greatest volume of any lake in Great Britain.
