J.K. Rowling created Hogwarts as Harry Potter’s school of magic.
Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry is a fictional British boarding school in the Harry Potter series. It is located in Scotland and is generally hidden from Muggle, or non-magical, society. Students usually begin their education there at age eleven and study for seven years.
The school is divided into four houses: Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, and Slytherin. A Sorting Hat assigns new students to houses, which function as living communities and compete for the annual House Cup.
Hogwarts is more than a setting: it provides the series with recurring teachers, traditions, rivalries, and mysteries. The name is often confused with other wizarding schools in Rowling’s world, including Beauxbatons Academy in France and Durmstrang Institute, whose exact location is not stated.
