Art Students League of New York
Answer
Art Students League of New York
Georgia O'Keeffe attended the Art Students League of New York before studying at Columbia University Teachers College.
She studied at the Art Students League in New York from 1907 to 1908. There she worked under William Merritt Chase, a prominent American painter and teacher. O'Keeffe won the League's William Merritt Chase still-life prize in 1908 for a painting titled Dead Rabbit with Copper Pot.
The training gave her a foundation in observational painting and academic technique. She later became dissatisfied with copying accepted artistic styles and encountered the ideas of Arthur Wesley Dow, whose emphasis on composition and personal expression helped redirect her approach.
The Art Students League is sometimes confused with the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, which O'Keeffe attended earlier, or Columbia Teachers College, where she later studied art education. These were separate stages in her education. Her eventual breakthrough came after she began making more experimental charcoal abstractions while teaching in Texas and Virginia.
