The Creation of Eve follows the Creation of Adam in the Sistine Chapel ceiling’s Genesis sequence.

Michelangelo organized nine central panels illustrating episodes from Genesis. Read from the altar toward the entrance, the panels move through the creation of the world, the creation and fall of humanity, and the stories of Noah. The Creation of Adam is followed by the Creation of Eve, before the scenes of the Temptation and Expulsion.

The Creation of Eve shows God presenting Eve to the sleeping Adam. It is less widely reproduced than The Creation of Adam, but it is essential to the sequence’s narrative structure. Michelangelo’s arrangement places the creation of humanity at the center of the ceiling’s theological story.

The order can be confusing because viewers often approach the chapel from the entrance rather than the altar. In that direction, the Genesis scenes appear in reverse. The question follows the traditional altar-to-entrance sequence used in descriptions of the ceiling.
