Pietro Perugino painted The Delivery of the Keys in the Sistine Chapel.

Completed around 1481–1482, the fresco shows Christ giving Saint Peter the keys to the Kingdom of Heaven. It forms part of the chapel’s north-wall cycle of scenes from the life of Christ. The composition places the principal encounter in a broad Renaissance landscape with a prominent centrally planned building.

The image was especially important for papal symbolism: Saint Peter was understood as the first pope, and the keys represented spiritual authority passed through the papal office. Perugino’s clear arrangement and spacious perspective made the scene a major achievement of the chapel’s original decoration.

The fresco is sometimes attributed to Raphael because Raphael later worked in the Vatican and was Perugino’s pupil. Raphael did not paint this Sistine Chapel scene; Perugino did.
