Saudi Aramco became the first Middle Eastern company to surpass a $2 trillion market capitalization.
The milestone occurred in December 2019, shortly after Saudi Aramco’s shares began trading on the Saudi Stock Exchange. The company’s initial public offering was one of the world’s largest, and strong early trading pushed its market value above the $2 trillion mark.
Saudi Aramco is Saudi Arabia’s state-controlled petroleum company and one of the largest integrated energy producers in the world. Its operations include crude-oil production, refining, chemicals, natural gas, and distribution. The company’s size is closely tied to its enormous hydrocarbon reserves and production capacity.
The $2 trillion valuation was a stock-market estimate, not a government-set appraisal. Oil prices, production expectations, dividends, and investor confidence can all affect the company’s market capitalization. Saudi Aramco’s listing also formed part of Saudi Arabia’s broader economic-diversification program.
