Which satellite-radio company merged with Sirius Satellite Radio in 2008?

The story behind the answer

XM Satellite Radio merged with Sirius Satellite Radio in 2008.

Sirius and XM announced their proposed merger in February 2007, arguing that combining the two subscription satellite-radio services would reduce duplication and improve programming choices. The U.S. Federal Communications Commission approved the transaction in July 2008, and the merger was completed on July 28, 2008.

The combined company initially operated as Sirius XM Radio. Because Sirius and XM used incompatible receivers and had different channel lineups, the businesses did not become technically identical overnight. Over time, the company consolidated services and developed a broader audio platform.

The merger’s name is commonly reversed in casual descriptions, but XM was the company that merged into Sirius. In 2020, the corporate name was shortened to Sirius XM Holdings, reflecting the service’s established brand.
