Chevron merged with Texaco in 2001 to create ChevronTexaco.
Chevron was one of the successor companies to Standard Oil of California, while Texaco had developed from the Texas Fuel Company founded in 1901. Both had large international exploration, refining, marketing, and retail operations.
The merger was announced in October 2000 and completed in 2001. The combined business initially used the name ChevronTexaco, reflecting both legacy brands. It became Chevron Corporation again in 2005, although Texaco products and stations continued in selected markets.
The transaction is distinct from Chevron’s later acquisitions of Unocal in 2005 and Anadarko Petroleum in 2019. Those were acquisitions rather than the 2001 merger that created the ChevronTexaco structure.
