Which company merged with Chase Manhattan in 1996 to form the new Chase Manhattan Corporation?

The story behind the answer

Chemical Bank merged with Chase Manhattan in 1996 to form the new Chase Manhattan Corporation.

Chemical Bank and Chase Manhattan were two of New York’s most prominent banks. Chemical had grown through earlier combinations, including its 1991 merger with Manufacturers Hanover, while Chase Manhattan traced its roots to the Bank of the Manhattan Company, founded in 1799.

The 1996 merger created one of the largest banking organizations in the United States. Although Chemical was the accounting acquirer, the combined institution used the more internationally recognized Chase Manhattan name.

The organization later became part of JPMorgan Chase. In 2000, Chase Manhattan merged with J.P. Morgan & Co., producing the corporate structure that ultimately became JPMorgan Chase through the 2000 merger.
