Which samba school won Rio Carnival’s 1963 championship with a parade about Chica da Silva?

The story behind the answer

Acadêmicos do Salgueiro won Rio Carnival’s 1963 championship with a parade about Chica da Silva.

The school’s 1963 theme celebrated Chica da Silva, an eighteenth-century Afro-Brazilian woman who became historically prominent in colonial Minas Gerais. The presentation helped make Salgueiro famous for innovative themes centered on Black history and Brazilian cultural figures.

Salgueiro was founded in 1953 in the Salgueiro neighborhood of Tijuca. Its red-and-white identity became one of the most recognizable visual traditions in Rio’s Special Group.

The 1963 parade is often remembered as a turning point in Carnival storytelling because it treated historical and Afro-Brazilian subject matter with unusual prominence. It also helped strengthen the role of research, narrative and visual interpretation in samba-school competition.
