The Rio samba school Estação Primeira de Mangueira is based in the Mangueira neighborhood.
The school’s name itself identifies its community connection: “Estação Primeira” means “First Station,” while Mangueira refers to the neighborhood and hill community in Rio de Janeiro. The school was founded in 1928 and became one of the most influential institutions in Brazilian samba.
Mangueira is celebrated for its distinctive green-and-pink colors, major composers, and long record of innovative Carnival presentations. Its community has also been associated with important figures in samba, including Cartola, one of Brazil’s most admired composers.
The school is sometimes confused with Portela, which is associated with Madureira, or Unidos de Vila Isabel, whose home is Vila Isabel. Those schools have separate histories, colors, and community bases.
