Which Russian port city is associated with the historical origin of the Russian Blue cat?

The story behind the answer

Arkhangelsk is the Russian port city historically associated with the origin of the Russian Blue cat.

The breed was also called the Archangel cat, a name linked to Arkhangelsk, which was known as Archangel in older English usage. Sailors are traditionally said to have taken these blue-gray cats from the port to Britain during the nineteenth century, though the exact early history is not fully documented.

Russian Blues are known for a short, dense coat with an even blue-gray color and silver-tipped hairs that create a shimmering effect. Their eyes are vivid green in mature cats. The breed’s appearance is often confused with other blue cats, including the Chartreux and the British Shorthair.

Modern Russian Blue breeding established a consistent type after the breed’s early development in Britain. The port association explains the traditional name, but it does not mean every blue-gray cat from Russia is a pedigreed Russian Blue.
