Which rugby union tournament was first known as the Home Nations Championship?

The story behind the answer

The tournament first known as the Home Nations Championship is the Six Nations Championship.

The competition began in 1883 as a championship between England, Ireland, Scotland, and Wales. Because those four teams were the Home Nations of British and Irish rugby, the event became known as the Home Nations Championship.

France joined in 1910, changing the title to the Five Nations Championship. Italy entered in 2000, creating the modern Six Nations Championship. The tournament is played annually and remains one of rugby union’s most prestigious international competitions.

The name is sometimes confused with the Rugby Championship, which is contested by Argentina, Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa in the Southern Hemisphere. The Six Nations also contains several traditional trophy fixtures, including England versus Scotland for the Calcutta Cup and England versus Ireland for the Millennium Trophy.
