Which rugby union nation is known as Los Pumas?

The story behind the answer

Argentina’s national rugby union team is known as Los Pumas.

The nickname means “The Pumas” in Spanish. It arose from a mistaken identification during Argentina’s 1965 tour of Rhodesia and South Africa: a journalist believed the team badge showed a puma, although the emblem actually depicts a jaguar. The name nevertheless became established.

Argentina’s team wears shirts with the country’s traditional light-blue and white colours. Los Pumas are governed by the Argentine Rugby Union and compete in the Rugby Championship alongside Australia, New Zealand and South Africa.

Argentina became the first team from the Americas to reach a men’s Rugby World Cup semi-final when it finished third in 2007. The team has also produced notable players including Hugo Porta, Agustín Pichot and Juan Martín Hernández.
