Queen is the royal-sounding musical group that sings “We Will Rock You.” The British rock band released the anthem on its 1977 album News of the World, alongside the equally famous “We Are the Champions.”
Guitarist Brian May wrote “We Will Rock You” after noticing how strongly concert audiences responded when they were invited to clap and sing along. The recording is built around a memorable stomp-stomp-clap rhythm, with relatively little instrumentation before May’s guitar solo. That simple arrangement helped make it especially effective in stadiums and at sporting events.
Queen formed in London in 1970 with Freddie Mercury, Brian May, Roger Taylor, and later John Deacon. The song is often paired with “We Are the Champions,” although they are separate tracks. The title also inspired We Will Rock You, a jukebox musical featuring Queen songs that opened in London’s West End in 2002.
