Which royal heir did the Gunpowder Plot conspirators intend to make monarch after the planned attack?
Answer
Princess Elizabeth
Answer
Princess Elizabeth
The Gunpowder Plot conspirators intended to make Princess Elizabeth monarch after the planned attack.
Elizabeth was the nine-year-old daughter of King James I and Queen Anne. The plotters planned to seize her from Coombe Abbey in Warwickshire, where she was staying, and use her as a Catholic figurehead after killing the king and other members of the government.
The plan reflected the conspirators’ broader aim of replacing the Protestant succession with a Catholic-led regime. It depended on a successful attack in London, a rapid seizure of the princess and support from Catholic sympathisers, none of which materialised.
Elizabeth later became Queen Elizabeth of Bohemia after marrying Frederick V of the Palatinate. Her daughter Sophia became heir presumptive to the English throne, linking Elizabeth’s family line to the later Hanoverian succession.
