Which Romantic poet wrote 'Tintern Abbey'?

The story behind the answer

Which Romantic poet wrote “Tintern Abbey”? William Wordsworth wrote it.

The poem’s full title is “Lines Written a Few Miles above Tintern Abbey, on Revisiting the Banks of the Wye during a Tour, July 13, 1798.” It describes Wordsworth’s return to the Wye Valley in Wales and reflects on how remembered landscapes can shape the mind long after a person has left them.

Although it is commonly called “Tintern Abbey,” the abbey itself does not appear directly in the poem. Wordsworth focuses instead on the surrounding river, woods, cliffs, and rural landscape. The poem was published in Lyrical Ballads (1798), the landmark collection he produced with Samuel Taylor Coleridge.

A common mix-up is to associate the poem with Coleridge because the two poets collaborated closely and Coleridge wrote other major poems in the same collection. “Tintern Abbey,” however, is unmistakably Wordsworth’s meditation on nature, memory, imagination, and his sister Dorothy.
