Which Romantic poet wrote 'She Walks in Beauty'?
Answer
Lord Byron
Answer
Lord Byron
Lord Byron wrote “She Walks in Beauty,” one of the best-known lyric poems of the English Romantic period. The poem praises a woman’s beauty by blending images of darkness and light, suggesting that outward appearance and inner harmony can exist together.
Byron wrote the poem in 1814, reportedly after seeing Anne Beatrix Wilmot, the wife of his cousin Sir Robert Wilmot, at a London party on 11 June. The poem was published the following year in Hebrew Melodies, a collection for which Byron supplied lyrics to music associated with composer Isaac Nathan.
The poem is written in iambic tetrameter and became one of Byron’s most popular works. It is sometimes confused with poems by Percy Bysshe Shelley or John Keats because all three were major second-generation Romantic poets. Byron, however, is also strongly associated with the Byronic hero: a charismatic, rebellious, troubled figure who influenced later literature and popular culture.
