Which Roman goddess presided over fruit trees and orchards?

The story behind the answer

Which Roman goddess presided over fruit trees and orchards? Pomona was the Roman goddess who presided over fruit trees, gardens, and orchards.

Her name comes from the Latin word pomum, meaning fruit, especially orchard fruit. Unlike Ceres, whose sphere centered on grain and agriculture, Pomona focused on the cultivation and flourishing of trees that produced fruit. Her traditional attribute was a pruning knife, highlighting her connection with horticultural skill rather than harvest alone.

Roman myth described Pomona as a wood nymph who rejected the attention of woodland gods, including Silvanus and Picus. In Ovid’s account, Vertumnus—god of seasonal change and gardens—won her by disguising himself as an old woman and praising the virtues of love and cultivation. Pomona eventually became his consort.

Pomona had no exact Greek counterpart, although the Greek figure Opora is sometimes compared with her. She is also easily confused with Flora: Flora governed flowers and spring vegetation, while Pomona’s special domain was orchard fruit. Her festival, the Vertumnalia, was associated with Vertumnus on August 13.
