Which Roman god was the god of boundaries and landmarks?

The story behind the answer

Which Roman god was the god of boundaries and landmarks? Terminus was the Roman god who protected boundary markers and landmarks.

Terminus was closely associated with the physical stones that marked property lines. Roman landowners treated these markers as sacred, performing offerings and rituals to ensure that boundaries were respected and disputes avoided. His name is also the Latin word for a boundary stone or limit.

His principal festival, the Terminalia, was celebrated on February 23. Neighboring landowners decorated opposite sides of a boundary marker and offered crops, honeycombs, wine, and sometimes animal sacrifices. Terminus also had a sacred stone within the Temple of Jupiter Optimus Maximus on the Capitoline Hill; tradition said it could not be moved, symbolizing Rome’s permanent limits.

Terminus is commonly confused with Janus because Janus governed doorways, transitions, and beginnings, while Terminus specifically represented limits and borders. Mercury was associated with commerce and travel, and Saturn with agriculture and time—not boundary stones.
