Which Roman city was Jesus taken to for trial before Pontius Pilate?

The story behind the answer

Jesus was taken to Jerusalem for trial before Pontius Pilate.

The Gospel passion narratives place Jesus’ arrest and hearings in Jerusalem, the major Jewish religious center where he had come for Passover. The accounts describe questioning by Jewish authorities followed by a hearing before Pontius Pilate, the Roman prefect of Judaea. Pilate then authorizes crucifixion.

Jerusalem contained the Temple and attracted large pilgrimage crowds during major festivals. That setting helps explain why the final events in Jesus’ life occur there rather than in Galilee, where much of his earlier ministry is narrated.

Caesarea was the administrative headquarters of the Roman governor in Judaea, but the Gospels place Pilate’s hearing of Jesus in Jerusalem. Rome was the empire’s capital, not the location of this trial. The city name is therefore more precise than simply saying “Judaea.”
