Rocky III was the first Rocky film to feature Apollo Creed as Rocky’s trainer.
Apollo begins as Rocky’s opponent in the first two films, but their relationship changes after Rocky defeats him in the rematch. By Rocky III, Apollo has become a former champion and a trusted friend. After Mickey dies and Rocky loses to Clubber Lang, Apollo offers to train him.
Apollo takes Rocky to Los Angeles and helps him rebuild his boxing style. He emphasizes speed, footwork, and the qualities Rocky possessed before becoming comfortable as a wealthy champion. Apollo also introduces Rocky to his former training environment.
This partnership becomes one of the franchise’s most important developments. Apollo remains Rocky’s trainer and friend in Rocky IV, where Apollo’s death motivates Rocky’s fight with Ivan Drago. The Creed spin-offs later continue Apollo’s legacy through his son, Adonis.
