Boss won the 2007 DARPA Urban Challenge for autonomous vehicles.
Boss was an autonomous Chevrolet Tahoe developed by a team from Carnegie Mellon University, General Motors, Continental and other partners. The vehicle completed the 60-mile course in Victorville, California, in November 2007.
The Urban Challenge differed from earlier DARPA races because vehicles had to navigate a simulated urban environment, obey traffic rules, avoid obstacles, and interact safely with other autonomous and human-driven vehicles. Boss finished in 4 hours, 10 minutes and 20 seconds.
People often confuse Boss with Stanley, the Stanford vehicle that won the 2005 DARPA Grand Challenge. Junior, another Stanford vehicle, finished second in the 2007 Urban Challenge. These competitions helped accelerate research into autonomous driving and robotic navigation.
