Lore was the fictional android who served as Data’s brother in Star Trek: The Next Generation.
Lore was introduced in the 1989 episode “Datalore.” Like Data, he was built by the cyberneticist Dr. Noonien Soong, but Lore had a more human-like emotional capacity and developed a dangerous sense of superiority. The contrast between the two androids allowed the series to explore questions about artificial intelligence, ethics, emotion, and responsibility.
Brent Spiner played both Data and Lore, using costume, performance, and production techniques to portray the characters as separate beings. Lore is sometimes confused with B-4, another Soong-type android who appears in the 2002 film Star Trek: Nemesis. Data’s creator is Dr. Soong, but Soong is not an android himself; he is the human scientist who built them.
