The Marne River flows through Épernay, one of Champagne’s major wine-producing towns.
Épernay lies on the Marne in northeastern France, within the Champagne wine region. The town is especially famous for the Avenue de Champagne, where major houses maintain extensive underground cellars.
The Marne rises in the Langres Plateau and flows westward before joining the Seine near Charenton-le-Pont, southeast of Paris. Its valley has long provided transport routes and fertile land around the Champagne vineyards.
The Marne should not be confused with the nearby Aisne, another important river in the region. Reims, Champagne’s other major urban center, is not situated on the Marne itself.
