Which river flowed beside the ancient Spartan settlement?

The story behind the answer

The Eurotas River flowed beside the ancient Spartan settlement.

The Eurotas runs through the region of Laconia in the southeastern Peloponnese. Ancient Sparta stood in the Eurotas valley, between the Taygetus Mountains to the west and the Parnon range to the east. The river helped define the landscape in which Spartan society developed.

The valley supported agriculture, including crops associated with the Spartan economy. Sparta controlled much of Laconia and later Messenia, whose fertile lands were worked by helots. The Eurotas therefore belonged to a broader agricultural and political landscape, not merely to the city’s immediate streets.

The river is sometimes confused with other famous Greek waterways such as the Alpheios, which flowed through Elis. The Eurotas is the specifically Laconian river linked to Sparta and its surrounding plain.
