Which river did the Berlin Wall cross near the Oberbaum Bridge?
Answer
River Spree
Answer
River Spree
The Berlin Wall crossed the River Spree near the Oberbaum Bridge.
The Oberbaum Bridge links the Berlin districts of Kreuzberg and Friedrichshain. During the division of Berlin, the bridge itself formed part of the border between West Berlin and East Berlin. Concrete barriers, fencing, patrol areas, and controlled waterways made the river crossing difficult and dangerous.
The Spree is one of Berlin’s principal rivers and flows through the city center before joining the Havel. At the Oberbaum Bridge, the urban setting made the border especially visible: a historic bridge stood beside a heavily fortified boundary separating two political systems.
The Havel is another important Berlin waterway, which makes it a plausible alternative. However, the landmark most directly associated with the wall at Oberbaum Bridge is the Spree. After reunification, the bridge became a normal road and pedestrian connection and later appeared in films, photographs, and public art about divided Berlin.
