Which river connects Lake Erie with Lake St. Clair?
Answer
Detroit River
Answer
Detroit River
The Detroit River connects Lake Erie with Lake St. Clair.
The river flows for roughly 51 kilometres from Lake St. Clair southward to Lake Erie. Despite its name, it is not simply a river within one country: the international boundary between Canada and the United States runs through it. Detroit, Michigan, and Windsor, Ontario, face one another across the waterway.
Lake St. Clair is a relatively small lake between Lake Huron and Lake Erie. Water reaches it from Lake Huron through the Saint Clair River, crosses Lake St. Clair, and then continues through the Detroit River into Lake Erie. This route is part of the Great Lakes Waterway.
A common mix-up is to identify the Niagara River as the connector between Erie and Ontario. Niagara does perform that role, but the Detroit River belongs to the next westward section of the system. The river is also important for ports, industry, navigation and international border management.
