Which river connects Lake Erie with Lake Ontario in the Great Lakes system?
Answer
Niagara River
Answer
Niagara River
The Niagara River connects Lake Erie with Lake Ontario.
It flows north for about 58 kilometres from the eastern end of Lake Erie to the western end of Lake Ontario. The river forms much of the international boundary between the Canadian province of Ontario and New York State in the United States.
Niagara Falls divides the river into an upper section above the falls and a lower section below them. The falls create a major elevation drop, so ships cannot pass directly through the natural river route. The Welland Canal provides the navigable bypass between the two lakes.
The Niagara River is also an important source of hydroelectric power. Large generating stations on both sides of the border use the river’s flow, while diversion agreements help balance electricity production, scenic water flow, and ecological needs at the falls.
