Which river carries the most water into the sea?

The story behind the answer

The Amazon River carries more water into the sea than any other river, with an average discharge of roughly 209,000 cubic metres per second.

The river flows across South America and empties into the Atlantic Ocean. Its basin covers about 7 million square kilometres and includes the Amazon rainforest, the largest tropical rainforest on Earth. Thousands of tributaries feed the main river, including the Rio Negro, Madeira, and Japura.

The Nile is traditionally taught as the world’s longest river, while the Amazon is unquestionably the largest by discharge. River-length rankings are debated because researchers define sources and mouths differently. The Amazon’s water volume is not disputed in the same way: its enormous basin, heavy rainfall, and many tributaries make it the planet’s greatest river system by flow.
