Portela is the Rio samba school based in Madureira that uses blue and white as its traditional colors.
Founded in 1923, Grêmio Recreativo Escola de Samba Portela is one of the most historically successful schools in Rio Carnival. Its identity is closely associated with Madureira, a neighborhood in Rio’s North Zone, and with a blue-and-white flag featuring an eagle emblem.
Portela played a major role in establishing the artistic and musical standards of samba-school parades. Its composers, musicians, and parade traditions helped make the school influential beyond its championship record. The eagle is especially recognizable and distinguishes Portela from schools whose symbols include birds, crowns, or animals.
Portela is sometimes confused with Vila Isabel because both are strongly associated with blue and white. Vila Isabel’s traditional symbol is a crown, while Portela is identified with the eagle. The neighborhood clue, Madureira, is another useful way to separate the two schools.
