Which Rio de Janeiro square was a major early center of samba and Carnival culture?

The story behind the answer

Praça Onze was a major early center of samba and Carnival culture in Rio de Janeiro.

Located near the city center, the square became associated with Afro-Brazilian communities, musicians, religious traditions and popular festivities. It was especially important during the early twentieth century, when samba was developing as a recognizable urban musical culture.

The area was closely connected with the homes and gatherings of musicians who shaped early samba. Carnival groups also used the surrounding streets and neighborhoods, making Praça Onze an important meeting point before the modern Sambadrome era.

Urban redevelopment and the construction of major transport routes changed the area dramatically, and much of the historic square disappeared. Even so, Praça Onze remains a powerful reference in accounts of Rio’s samba history and is often described as the birthplace or cradle of modern Carioca samba culture.
