Which Rio Carnival samba school won the 1999 Special Group championship with the enredo “Brasil, mostra a tua cara!”?

Imperatriz Leopoldinense won Rio Carnival’s 1999 Special Group championship with the enredo “Brasil, mostra a tua cara!”.

The Portuguese title means “Brazil, show your face!” and referred to themes of Brazilian identity and society. Imperatriz was one of the dominant schools of the 1990s, winning several championships during that decade under the creative direction associated with carnavalesco Rosa Magalhães.

An enredo is the narrative or theme that organizes a school’s entire presentation. It shapes the samba-enredo, costumes, floats and choreography, so the title is more than a song name: it identifies the concept of the complete parade.

The school is based in Ramos and is one of Rio’s long-established Special Group competitors. Its 1999 victory is separate from later titles by schools such as Viradouro and Mangueira.
