Which Rio Carnival samba school was founded in 1953 in the Salgueiro neighborhood?

The story behind the answer

Acadêmicos do Salgueiro was founded in 1953 in Rio de Janeiro’s Salgueiro neighborhood.

The school emerged from the merger of local samba groups, including Depois Eu Digo and Azul e Branco. Its identity became closely connected with the community around Morro do Salgueiro and the wider Tijuca area.

Salgueiro is recognized for bringing Afro-Brazilian history and cultural subjects prominently into major Carnival narratives. Its red-and-white colors are among the most familiar visual identities in Rio’s samba-school competition.

The name can cause confusion because Salgueiro is both a neighborhood reference and the name of the school. It should not be confused with Unidos da Tijuca, another major school from the broader Tijuca region.
