Which rider won the first professional UCI Road World Championship in 1927?
Answer
Alfredo Binda
Answer
Alfredo Binda
Alfredo Binda won the first professional UCI Road World Championship in 1927.
The championship was staged at the Nürburgring in Germany on 21 July 1927. Binda, riding for Italy, won the 182.5-kilometre professional race and became the first wearer of the rainbow jersey in the professional road-racing category.
Binda was one of the dominant cyclists of the interwar period. He won the Giro d'Italia five times and claimed the world championship three times. His climbing ability and powerful finishing made him especially successful on demanding Italian courses.
The first world championships included separate professional and amateur races. This distinction matters because the amateur event had a different winner, Belgium's Henny Binneman. Later reforms brought the competition structure closer to the modern elite, under-23 and junior categories.
