Answer
Lucien Petit-Breton
Answer
Lucien Petit-Breton
Lucien Petit-Breton won the first Milan–San Remo in 1907.
The Italian classic was first held on 14 April 1907, linking Milan with San Remo over approximately 286 kilometres. Petit-Breton, riding for France, completed the inaugural race in about 11 hours and 4 minutes, finishing ahead of Gustave Garrigou.
Milan–San Remo became known as La Primavera, or “The Spring,” because it is held in early spring and follows a route from northern Italy toward the Ligurian coast. Its long distance and relatively low overall climbing have made it one of cycling’s most distinctive one-day races.
Petit-Breton was already a Tour de France winner when he took the Italian classic. He later won the Tour again in 1908. Costante Girardengo became the race’s first dominant specialist, winning six editions between 1918 and 1928.
